Millets: Nourishing People and the Planet

Updated: Apr 3

Small but mighty, a future superfood!

What are we???

Millets!!

When we look into the recap of 2023, we’ve heard this word numerous times.  Yes, The United Nations General Assembly at its 75th session in March 2021 declared 2023,

the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). They considered this an opportunity to raise awareness of the nutrients and the health benefits of millets and their suitability for cultivation under changing climatic conditions.

Did you know?

The International Year of Millets 2023 contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A big one!

Millets Matter

India is honoured to be at the forefront of popularizing millets. Millet consumption further enhances nutrition, food security, and the welfare of farmers.

– Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Millets are primarily grown in Asia and Africa, with India being the top producer followed by Nigeria, Niger, and China.

These ‘future crops’ have so much potential for humans and the environment…

  • Climate Champions: Millets flourish in tough conditions, demonstrating extraordinary resilience in the face of climate change. They offer food security when other crops may fail.

  • Nutritional Powerhouses: Rich in protein, fiber, antioxidants, and essential minerals, millets promote health and well-being, contributing to the fight against malnutrition.

  • Supporting Sustainable Agriculture: Millets require minimal inputs and are resistant to pests and diseases, making them a boon for farmers and supporting environmentally responsible agriculture.
