Usually the senior Shaktis go for performances, but this time the Junior Shaktis from Gurgaon and Vasant Kunj center got a chance to display their learnings on such a beautiful platform live. They showcased their talents by performing yoga and classical dances like Bharatnatyam and Kathak. It was the first big stage for many of our girls, where they gave a speech and performed on beautiful pieces like Paani and Ai giri Nandini . This event helped the Shaktis boost their confidence and believe in themselves. Coming from a marginalized background, this experience at such a big place made them aware of their talent. They felt valued and appreciated in this event. Apart from the performances, The Leela Ambience also arranged for a drawing competition for them. The Shaktis participated in it with great enthusiasm. The Leela Ambience served them delicious food afterwards, specially prepared for the occasion of Children’s Day. - Beyond the Fireworks: Confronting the Pollution Crisis After Diwali
Diwali, also called as the festival of lights, is one of the most important and loved festival celebrated in India. Bringing tremendous excitement and celebration spirit, Diwali also comes with a concern needed to be addressed immediately - the increasing use of firecrackers. Nowadays, Diwali celebrations are considered incomplete without firecrackers. The firecrackers light up the entire sky for a few moments, giving us a feeling of joy but in turn are terribly affecting the environment and our health, in ways we often overlook. How crackers affect the environment Firecrackers are harming us in multiple ways. Like previous years, this year also there were many accidents due to firecrackers - major ones including people burning themselves while lighting them. Packed with chemicals like Sulphur, Zinc, Copper and Sodium, firecrackers increase the concentration of dust and pollutants in the air. These chemicals settle down in the exposed areas, and the dust and pollutants destruct the environment - putting our health at risk. · Causing Air Pollution –The crackers contain many toxic chemicals which after burning, get activated and are suspended in the environment in the form of harmful gases, causing air pollution. For example, One such chemical- Nitrous oxide remains in the air for a long time if the area doesn’t get heavy rain or strong winds, leading to various health problems. · Global Warming – Bursting crackers increases heat, carbon dioxide and many toxic gases in the atmosphere, which causes a rise in the temperature of the earth- leading to global warming. · Noise Pollution – The loud sound produced by crackers can also affect humans directly. It can cause hearing loss, particularly in children and the elderly. The sudden loud sounds can also trigger heart problems in vulnerable individuals. · Garbage – The residual of crackers after bursting turns into garbage which usually is not taken care of, affecting the environment. · Fire Accidents – In the cracker market, a small spark can cause huge damage to the market, nearby residents and the people present in there. Also, if not handled properly, it may cause severe injuries like burns and respiratory problems. · Increased risk of road accidents – The tremendous amount of smoke produced after burning a lot of crackers often ends up reducing the visibility on the roads, increasing the risk of road accidents. · For Animals –The noise of firecrackers scares the animals and makes them unstable which leads to shivering, drooling, howling, psychosis or excessive barking. Possible health risks that occur due to firecrackers Of the numerous health risks that are caused by firecrackers, some are listed below: · Patients suffering from infections and allergies can face severe issues, as it may cause congestion of the throat and chest. · Due to the smoke of firecrackers, the suspended particles in the air increase and everyone exposed to that air is prone to suffer from ear, eye, nose and throat-related problems. · Air and Noise pollution caused by firecrackers can increase the impact of pre-existing problems and disorders of patients related to the heart, respiratory and nervous systems. · Radioactive and poisonous elements are used to spread the color in the sky when crackers burst, which can increase the risk of cancer. · The increased level of chemical compounds in the air can limit the growth of children and increase the toxic level of the body. Eco-friendly Diwali celebrated by our Shaktis Celebrating a green Diwali is very important in this modern era because we are standing on the verge of the collapse of nature. With deforestation, overpopulation, and exploitation of our mineral resources, the temperature of the Earth is rapidly increasing, which can make many places on Earth unlivable. Considering the environment and health hazards, Shaktis adopted an Eco-friendly Diwali celebration . Our girls made rangoli from beautiful natural flowers and decorated the ambience with flowers. Shaktis also used natural colors made from turmeric, coffee powder, flower petals, and rice flour instead of chemical colors for rangoli decoration. They refrained from bursting harmful toxic firecrackers, thus not contributing towards air pollution and noise pollution. Also, instead of using plastic/ artificial diyas, they used clay diyas - making the celebration filled with joy and warmth. The rising pollution demands the need to celebrate Green Diwali. The festive spirit of Diwali can be enjoyed by adopting these eco-friendly practices - reducing the harmful impact on the environment and making it more environment friendly. Let’s light up the world with joy, not with smoke! Written by: Neha R Kumar Proofread and edited by: Indu Sharma
- Small Steps, Big Impact: How Individual Efforts can Drive Social Change
Whenever we think of bringing about changes in the society, our minds often leap to great movements and big influential leaders. But history shows us that these social changes are always initiated by a spark, ignited by individual efforts. Each person’s actions contribute to a ripple effect that extends across the society and beyond. The real, lasting change often begins with individuals driven by passion, determination, compassion and a belief that the world can be a better place. In essence, every significant societal shift begins with one person, one choice and one act of courage. THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF INDIVIDUAL ACTION One person can inspire another and soon a community forms around a shared vision of change. When enough people adopt this mindset, individual acts can become a powerful collective force that shifts societal attitude and norms. This is the principle behind Sarvam too, to recognise that societal change begins at the individual level. Our work is rooted in nurturing these young girls to become confident, skilled and compassionate individuals who can create positive change. The aim to start Sarvam was the idea of Founder Nehha Bhatnagar Ma’am, with her individual efforts during the initial days by teaching a handful of young girls under the comforting shade of a tree, being unaware of this idea to evolve into something extraordinary. Inspired from her individual efforts, people started joining and helping her - leading to existence of Sarvam and where it stands today. At Sarvam, we provide holistic education - through skill building, education, providing nutrition and character development, Sarvam equips these girls with tools to uplift themselves. Sarvam: Empowering Girls, Inspiring Change Sarvam’s mission is simple but impactful - empowering young girls from marginalized backgrounds to realize their potential. Through programs that develop skills, foster confidence and open up new educational and career opportunities, Sarvam is creating a generation of young girls who are ready to challenge societal limitations and lead change. Sarvam organizes various events where our girls can showcase their talents and interact with people in the society. The confidence these girls display is a testament to Sarvam’s nurturing environment, which teaches them to believe in themselves and their potential. Sarvam’s work shows that helping even a small group of individuals can lead to meaningful societal change, as the girls go on to inspire others in their communities. Be Part Of The Change There are many ways in which we can start making a difference and create positive changes in our own way - like volunteering for social work in nearby areas, whether it’s for education, health or environment conservation. Skill based volunteering can also be practiced by many individuals like tutoring or mentoring. One can also help by donating resources, goods, hygiene products and education supplies that will be beneficial for the needy people. In today’s digital age, social media can be a powerful tool for driving change. Using it to spread awareness, share stories and support NGO’s that work for the benefit of the society and bring about positive changes in the society. Moving from Inspiration to Action At its core, creating social change begins with the belief that every effort, no matter how small, matters. Sarvam shows us that by investing in individuals, we are not just changing their lives, we are setting a wave of ripples that will continue to spread through individuals, communities and even society at large. - Equality for all: Tackling gender inequality and empowering marginalized girls!
Gender equality is a significant issue across the world. Girls from marginalized communities face a lot of challenges that restrict their access to basic rights, education and opportunities for growth. Gender disparity in Education In India the dropout rate of girls from schools, especially those who are from marginalized backgrounds is high. Money issues are a big factor, as families often choose to keep their daughters at home instead of sending them to school to save money. Due to this, the girls are not able to uplift themselves and their families are trapped in poverty. Health and Nutrition issues Many marginalized girls face limited access to basic healthcare and proper nutrition. Lack of basic healthcare resources and a balanced diet often leads to malnutrition and other health risks in them. Access to healthcare for the girls is not only a basic right, but also essential for their ability to contribute to society in a meaningful way. Girl child labor The poor family condition of girls often forces them to work from a very young age which has a harmful impact in the long term. Girls often work in hazardous environments like domestic labor and agriculture, where they have to work for long hours. This makes them vulnerable to exploitation and can cause physical strain, which impacts their health and well-being. Many girls are also expected to balance these jobs with household responsibilities, leaving them with little or no time for studies and personal growth. Background of Issues faced by Shaktis Our Shaktis come from communities where they face big challenges. In their villages, there are often very few healthcare facilities, and most people don’t know much about reproductive or menstrual health. Some have also grown up in places where they face violence but were unable to speak up against it. At Sarvam Shakti, these young girls find the resources they need to overcome these challenges. They learn about their health, understand their rights, and start to see new possibilities for themselves. With the support and guidance of their mentors, the Shaktis are not only healing but are also gaining the strength and confidence to build a better life for themselves. Through Sarvam Shakti, they discover a sense of belonging and a ray of hope - that a bright future is within their reach. Solutions To achieve gender equality for marginalized girls in India, we need a strong plan. Key steps include spreading awareness about the importance of education for the girl-child, offering financial help, and improving facilities to make schools more comfortable and safe. Better enforcement of laws made to protect girls from exploitation should be ensured. Helping marginalized girls means addressing all the problems they face. Even though the challenges are big, many NGOs including Sarvam and various activists are working hard to bring the change. Sarvam provides healthy and nutritious food items and drinks to our Shaktis, ensuring their nutritional needs are met. We also conduct various workshops, educating them about their health and hygiene. By providing girls with education, healthcare, and safety, we can empower them to escape poverty and realize their full potential! Written By - Raunak Yadav Proofread and edited by - Indu Sharma
